  • He then joined Villarreal on a one-year deal to reunite with manager Unai Emery
  • Emery previously managed Aurier at PSG before he was sold to Tottenham
  • Aurier had been linked with a sensational move to Tottenham’s rivals Arsenal
  • The full-back though insists he has ‘too much respect’ for his former side

Serge Aurier has insisted he would never join Arsenal because he has ‘too much respect’ for his former side Tottenham.

The 28-year-old defender joined Villarreal this week after he agreed to mutually terminate his contract with Tottenham in the summer.

Aurier was linked with a move across north London to the Gunners, but instead reunited with Unai Emery, having previously worked with the Spaniard at Paris Saint-Germain.

In a post on Instagram he wrote: ‘First of all, I would like to thank all the Spurs fans for these four wonderful seasons with you.

‘They were all different but I leave with some great memories. I really enjoyed playing the game wearing your colours proudly.

‘It is true that not everything was perfect, there were moments of joy and sadness but know one thing, I have always played 100 per cent, without cheating!

‘I have never seen myself at another club in England if not at your place! And I didn’t see myself joining the enemy even less because I have too much respect for our club, for our history and for all our moments shared together.

‘You have shown unfailing support during these four seasons and I really want to thank you because you have given me so much!

‘The last few months have not been easy and I would have liked to say goodbye to you on better terms, but each story comes to an end, you have to know how to accept it and move on!’

Aurier won three trophies together with Emery at PSG including the Coupe de France in 2017.

The Ivory Coast international joined Tottenham for £23million in 2017, but struggled to fully adapt to the Premier League.

They agreed to mutually terminate his contract, which had one year left in August, after the club completed the signing of Emerson Royal from Barcelona.

After joining the club on Monday, Aurier will compete for a spot with former Spurs team-mate Juan Foyth, who signed permanently for Villarreal in the summer following a successful loan spell last season.

As reported by Goal, Aurier has told Villarreal TV that he is happy to reunite with Emery at his new club.

He said: ‘It’s a very good opportunity for me to start a new challenge. Now I have to fight with my team to get what we deserve.

‘There’s a real opportunity for me because I already know Unai Emery.

‘We had a great time at PSG together. Before I signed here, he called me and explained everything to me, and I’m happy to go back to work with him because we still have a good relationship.’
