Conor McGregor should fight Nate Diaz in ‘tune-up’ before facing Dustin Poirier, says Bisping

Conor McGregor should take a ‘tune-up fight’ against Nate Diaz before facing Dustin Poirier again, claims UFC legend Michael Bisping… with Irishman needing to ‘blow off the ring rust’ after suffering a broken leg

  • Conor McGregor has been told to take a ‘tune-up fight’ by Michael Bisping
  • McGregor is still recovering from a broken leg he suffered against Dustin Poirier
  • Bisping believes the Irishman should fight Nate Diaz before facing Poirier again
  • Diaz handed McGregor his first defeat in 2016 before he claimed revenge

Conor McGregor has been advised to take a ‘tune-up fight’ against Nate Diaz before facing bitter rival Dustin Poirier for a fourth time in order to ‘blow off the ring rust’ after breaking his leg.

McGregor suffered a combined break of the tibula and fibula at the end of the first round of his trilogy fight with Poirer back in July and is still recovering after surgery.

While the Irishman is eyeing a quick return to the Octagon, former UFC star and analyst Michael Bisping has advised him against jumping straight back in to face Poirier, instead labelling Diaz as the ideal opponent.

Diaz handed McGregor his first professional defeat in 2016 with a choke submission victory before the Notorious got his revenge with a decision win later in the year.

The pair have long been linked with a trilogy fight and Bisping wants to see it happen.

‘Hopefully, we see that fight,’ Bisping said on the Believe You Me podcast.

‘I’m not sure if he wants to come back, Conor I’m talking about, after what’s probably going to be about a year’s lay-off and fighting Dustin for the third time.

‘You kind of want to get your whistle wet. Find your mojo, blow off that ring rust. Nate would be the guy. Then, if Conor beats Nate, then he fights Dustin, because, you know, they are going to do a fourth fight.

‘The fourth fight will be absolutely massive, but I think if I was Conor’s manager, if I was advising him, I would say “take a tune-up fight”, you know what I mean?’

The Irishman may not be inclined to take Bisping’s advice after calling the former champion a ‘nobody’ following his claim that Daniel Cormier would tear him ‘limb from limb’.

‘Bisping is a nobody on Sirius xm,’ he wrote on Twitter last month. ‘Rushed back to competition after being dropped/strangled and then gets shotgun slept by (Kelvin) Gastelum’s left hand. Devastating.

‘Even though I collect commission on all his fights, I still said to the team to pull the ‘gast’ fight. I knew it was coming.

‘But hey, 100k! 50k off the top of each fight. I used to say “yoink” every time it hit the account.’

YouTube-turned-boxing star Jake Paul has also been suggested as a potential opponent for McGregor, with Eddie Hearn believing it would be a good fight.

Paul has won all four of his professional fights, most recently overcoming Tyron Woodley last weekend.

While facing McGregor would represent a significant challenge for Paul, Hearn feels that it would be a good opportunity for the 24-year-old to ‘make loads of money’.

Hearn told IFL: ‘Look, you’ve got to take your hat off. What Jake Paul and Logan Paul did was quite amazing, you know? And the show was packed.

‘I think he should fight Conor McGregor. I think he’s [Jake Paul] going to get beat sooner or later. So why not just go and fight Conor McGregor and make loads of money. It’s actually quite a good fight.

‘I don’t know how they’re going to make the weight up. Could Jake get to 170? I don’t know. But just make the fight. Let them make a few quid and then walk off into the sunset.’
